Community Invovlement In Helping the Environment

Communities play a substantial role in maintaining the environment in which they live. For one, they interact with it on a daily basis by walking on the grass, eating fruit off trees, using trees to build houses or by making fires out of old branches on the ground. Depending on the sort of community in which you live, you could have a varied impact on your surrounding environment. Environmentalists like to refer to your impact on the environment as your ecological footprint.

The more resources you consume, the more strain you put on the environment as a whole. Scientist predict that we are using as much resources as could only be replenished by three similarly sized planets! This is clearly not a sustainable approach to managing our limited resources. I’d bet that if most environmentalists and environmental scientists did an economics degree – we’d also be a lot better off in terms of developing sustainable solutions.

For the mean time though, generating awareness of the issues and educating people about them has to be our best approach in terms of alleviating our strain on the environment. Anyway, with regards to your ecological footprint, this is a very simple tol which can give you a ball-park figure of how much you are straining the environment. One way to find out about your footprint can be done by taking an online test. It’ll only take 5 minutes but it’s worth it’s weight in gold.
