Google, the company who endeavours to organise the world’s information for internet users, also strives to be a 100 percent green company and exercise their social responsibility. Is this really possible?
A 2005 estimate puts Google’s computers at 450,000 in its 25 datacenters, worldwide. This many computers are said to draw 20 Megawatts of electricity per month and cost the company over $2 Million dollars to run. Not only is this an old estimation, Google has since bought new data centers and is planning a new datacenter to be constructed over the next few years.
They announced in 2006 that they were adding solar panels to the Googleplex which aim to satisfy 30 percent of the complex’s energy requirements, by producing up to 1.6 megawatts of electricity. They also plan to become carbon neutral by investing in green activities and buying carbon offsets. In 2009, they are also expecting to build a data center which will take advantage of green energy in the form of Wind power.
As you can see, Google really is working hard to uphold it’s motto (”Don’t Be Evil.”), despite being the giant company it has become today.
PS. I have to admit, it was hard finding the image for this article – I resorted to Yahoo! Google, if you’re reading this, your image search sucks compared to Yahoo’s.
